Assertiveness DIFFERENCES IN STUDENTS WHO HAVE A CULTURE individualism and collectivism

Abstract


Assertiveness is an ability to commu-
nicate or express rights, thoughts, feelings and what they
want to others to be honest, but while maintaining and re-
specting the rights and feelings of others. One of the factors
that aect the assertiveness, the cultural factor. The pur-
pose of this study was to test empirically the dierences
assertiveness in students who have a culture of individu-
alism and collectivism. This study uses a quantitative ap-
proach, the subject of college freshmen and sophomores Gu-
nadarma S1 program of the faculty of Industrial Technology,
Computer Science, Psychology, Literature and Economics
of 2008. Techniques of data collection in this study using
a questionnaire scale, namely the questionnaire assertive-
ness and individualism-collectivism cultural questionnaires.
Data analysis technique used is the t-test, the independent
sample test. The results of this penellitian known that there
are signicant dierences in assertiveness on the students
to the culture of individualism and collectivism. Students
with the culture of individualism is more assertive than the
students with the culture of collectivism. Subjects in this
study had higher assertiveness to the subject with the cul-
ture of individualism, while subjects classied as collectivist
asertivitasnya average. Similarly, a subject known to man
is more assertive than women. Subjects 21-23 years of age
have a higher aserrtivitas than 18-20 years of age. Based on
the faculty, a group of subjects from the faculty of Indus-
trial Technology and Computer Science has a higher level
of assertiveness compared with the group of subjects from
the faculty of Psychology, Literature and Economics.
