Abstract


Many people with disabilities who consider
that the state of his disability as a barrier that has robbed
them of life. People with disabilities are limited her ability
to feel, even not a few who felt that he could not do
anything and lack of condence because of the limitations
they have it. The attitude and eorts of parents as a form
of reaction to help and assist the child is aecting the
quality of his character and personality of the child. It
often happens parents are reluctant to admit that the child
has a disability. Reluctance to accept the situation as it is
often accompanied by feelings of self-blame or blaming the
child. Therefore, it can be concluded that the emotional
atmosphere in the family is very important for develop-
mental child's personality. Moreover since every child who
is physically disabled children who have special emotional
needs. They are very dependent on the aection, attention
and protection of parents. Then physically handicapped
child relationships with parents and siblings is more impor-
tant than a normal child. So, this is where communication
between parents and children is needed. In simple terms it
can be said that communication is the delivery and receipt
of a message (message). Interpersonal communication is a
kind of a transaction, or spiritual relationship that occurs
when two or more people willing and able to meet the
people who share each other with their uniqueness, choose
an active, emotional, value and conscious of the presence
of others . The purpose of this study was conducted
to know the description of interpersonal communication
between parents with disabled children, and the factors
that in
uence interpersonal communication of parents in
improving self-esteem in young physically disabled..In this
study the authors used a qualitative approach because
qualitative methods are suited to the problems that aims
to explore the life of a person or a person's behavior in his
daily life, using qualitative methods were also obtained a
deep understanding of various social phenomena that occur
in the community. Data collection techniques in the study
were using interviews and observations with the subject
and signicant others. To assist the process of collecting
data the researcher is equipped with a guidance interview
and tape recorder (tape recorder). In the present study
determined a number of characteristics for study subjects
are parents who have disabled children with an age range
6-12 years (school age)
and subjects residing in Depok and Lenteng Agung
(South Jakarta). The number of subjects in this study are
two sets of parents. After doing research, it can be con-
cluded that in the case of subject 1 (a and b), the charac-
teristics of interpersonal communication that occurs is re-
turned ampuan subject to give an explanation about the
lack or limitation experienced by their children, provide
understanding and convince his son to not self-conscious
(shame), listening any complaints or desires (his son), ex-
pression of feelings the subject of his son, moral support
(support), material support, instilling attitudes of optimism
and taught to not be easily discouraged. While in the
case of subject 2 (a and b) provide understanding and con-
vince his son to not self-conscious (shame) rather than part
of the characteristics of interpersonal communication con-
ducted by the subject. The components of interpersonal
communication on the subject case subject 2 (a and b) is a
verbal communication, non verbal communication, teaching
the value of honesty and openness in children, reactions in
response to the opinions and wishes his son and empathy
for their children. While in the case of subject 1 (a and b)
verbal communication rather than part of the components
of interpersonal communication. In the case of subject 1
(a and b) and 2 (a and b) the factors that in
uence inter-
personal communication is the subject of beliefs about the
capabilities of the child, treatment of the subject when their
children do something wrong and the goodness and teaching
the value of honesty and openness in the child
